Chapter Seven

Prisoner of War, October 1917

The “slave camp” environment Manuel describes was not fully understood by the Allied military leadership or general public until after the war’s end. It is a phenomenon that has attracted little serious scholarly attention. This fact may be attributable to the far greater scrutiny directed to later Second World War horrors associated with Nazi Germany’s concentration camps, “final solution” Jewish extermination plans, Stalin-inspired Ukrainian genocides, and similar, better-documented atrocities.

However, what Manuel recounts is both powerful and highly instructive. The “slave camp” is a chilling precursor for what lay ahead in the Second World War. His escape attempt, with its black comedy aspects, and his recapture are defining points in the entire Manuel narrative. The escape took place in March 1918. It arguably provides the most detailed first-hand account of POW life and attempted escape by a North American Great War soldier ever published.
